Theresa Griffin MEP visits Sellafield

North West MEP Theresa Griffin today visited Sellafield in West Cumbria.

Sellafield Ltd employs over 10,000 people in the North West in Cumbria and Risley in Warrington. This year alone they have taken on over 200 apprentices across the company this year and have been named top apprentice employer in the North West at the National Apprenticeships Awards 2015.

From April 2016 Sellafield Ltd will become a subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).

Theresa Griffin, Labour’s European Spokesperson for Energy, said:

“It has been really worthwhile to visit the Sellafield site today and to learn more about the work that they are doing with decommissioning. I was also particularly good to hear about the work that Sellafield and the NDA are doing in regards to skills and socioeconomic and local investment.

“It is absolutely key that West Cumbria becomes a Centre of Nuclear Excellence as part of a strategic plan for all of West Cumbria which maximises procurement opportunities, local supply chains and up-skilling local people to access high quality jobs.

Sellafield Ltd Government Relations manager Steve Barnes said:

“It was great to host a visit for Theresa Griffin, to show her the excellent progress we’re making in the decommissioning programme at Sellafield.

“The skills and expertise in the Sellafield Ltd workforce are the best in the world and I was pleased to show Theresa how we are responding to the unique challenges the site presents.”

Brian Hough, Socio Economics & Stakeholder Manager for the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority in Cumbria said:

“We also had an extremely useful discussion around the role of Sellafield in developing and supporting economic growth. That is so important in the context of Cumbria’s role in the NW & the Northern Powerhouse.”
