Steve Rotherham launches his campaign to become metro mayor for the Liverpool City Region

Yesterday morning I had the pleasure of joining friends and comrades from right across the Liverpool city region to launch Steve Rotheram’s metro mayor campaign for Merseyside and Halton.

Born and bred in Kirkby, one of eight children, left school at 16 to work as a brick-layer – Steve’s story is a familiar one to many people across the Liverpool City Region. His vision for the future of the region is ambitious, and one that is driven by concern for the people of the region, not personal gain.

Kicking off the campaign, Steve promised that under his Mayoralty, no community, town or village in the City Region will be left behind. He will reduce the fast-tag cost of a single journey through our tunnels to £1, create a LCR Renewable Energy Company to harness the river Mersey, use offshore tidal energy to power homes and introduce concessionary travel passes for new apprentices.

This is a new start for the Liverpool City Region, with opportunities as diverse as the people who live here. It’s time for a city region that wrestles back control from Whitehall to build a strong economy and community based on Labour values.
